WWOOFer 2012

I just wanted to say a big thank you to you and Markus for making me most welcome at Eulenhof last month. Even though I stayed only a week it felt like I was part of a big family. Everyone was so warm and friendly! I love how different each day was from teaching the school kids how to catch chickens to harvesting Zucchinis and making sure they had to be at least 14cm (I can't look at Zucchinis at the supermarket now without mentally picturing whether they are 14cm or not!) to helping out on the delivery runs. The highlight for me was definitely the last dinner on the Friday night where we ate together with all the new and old FöJs and simply enjoyed each other's company. The warm hospitality, generosity and sincerity is something that cannot be described in words and has to be experienced in real life. It was a fantastic experience working at Eulenhof and I would highly recommend it to anyone who really wants to get their hands dirty and experience a taste of organic farming in Germany.

I truly enjoyed my stay at Eulenhof. It was an eye opening experience as this was my first time staying on a farm. Surrounded by various kinds of vegetables and also chickens, I felt engaged in nature and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wishes to find a break from the city.

The farm hosts are nice peeps! My German was real bad but they tried their best to explain things in English when I looked lost in the seemingly fun conversations. The other volunteers were also fun to interact with too! Overall, a happy and fulfilling stay at Eulenhof!

Rebecca aus England schreibt:

I only stayed ten days at Eulenhof which really wasn't long enough and by the time it came to leaving i felt very settled in. There were lots of other people from all over the world wwoofing or carrying out year long internships while I was there, all of whom were very friendly and meant that there was lots of different cooking styles happening in the kitchen in the evenings.

There was a nice structure to each day, breakfast all together at 8, then work started prompty at 8.30am. This involved harvesting fruit and vegetables such as beans, courgettes, cucumbers, tomatoes etc. Other jobs included planting, weeding, collecting eggs, feeding the chickens and preparing the vegetable for customer orders. We would then go to Sedus canteen to have lunch. The lunch was a very good quality and was made with all of the fresh produce from the farm, so there was lots of delious salad as a starter. We would have a 90 min break and then back to work for a few hours.

On one of the days children from one of the local villages came for a special activity day, carrying out different activities on the farm and learning about what was being grown. In addition I played some British games with them such as 'What's the time mister wolf?' getting them to count in English and skipping songs. In the evenings we would all cook together and relax in the house. On a few evening we went to Waldshut to go to local fayres as part of the villages' Chilbi celebrations. I also went swimming in the Rhein on particularly hot days to cool down and enjoy the local scenery. I also helped out at the market on the Saturday, this was really hectic but very fun. Although I didn't speak German lots of the customers spoke English and my German rapidly improved over those few hours.

By the end of my ten days I felt like I had been away on a health retreat from all the sunshine, outdoors work and fresh fruit and vegetables. If you are reading this and considering spending some time at Eulenhof I would definitely recommend it. :)

From the second I arrived at Eulenhof, I didn't stop learning. From the best size to harvest zucchinis, the proper way to prune tomato plants, how to be a good salesperson (flirt!), how to put 300 chickens to bed, how to drive a tractor, that apparently I'm "born to plant," and a lot more German than I bargained for! I'm grateful to all the kind people who made this experience so memorable, and I wish all the best to the farmers, students, WWOOFers, and workers at Eulenhof and Sedus who work so hard every day!
